Historical fiction must be set in the past. The main characters are generally fictional, though they often rub shoulders with historically prominent people. Sometimes the story's focus is not on events in history, but rather on a wholly imaginary plot that is accurately set in a particular period and place from the past. At other times, a story's plot involves the protagonist in famous historical events.
