What is InterLibrary Loan?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I request an item?
To request an item, please compete the InterLibrary Loan Form.

Who can use Asbury University's interlibrary loan?
Eligible: Asbury University students, staff, and faculty.
Ineligible: Alumni, community borrowers, Asbury Theological Seminary students, staff, and faculty.

What is the cost for an interlibrary loan?
Asbury University covers most interlibrary loan expenses. Sometimes lending libraries charge over $25.00 for borrowing an item. If so, requestors will be notified and have the option to pay the difference or cancel the order.

Patrons will be charged for all items not returned along with any associated lost book fees or late fees.

How long will it take to get my interlibrary loan request?
For articles or other electronically delivered items, it is about 2-3 days.  Please allow 7 days to 2 weeks to receive other requested items.

Where do I pick it up?
Books, microform and other non-photocopy materials must be picked up from and returned to the Library Desk. Users will be notified by email when a requested item has been received or if there are any problems filling a request. Items that are not picked up by their due date will be returned to the lending library.

Photocopies of journal articles will be sent by email to your campus email address and do not need to be returned.

How long can I keep the item?
The loan period for books, microform, and non-photocopy material is determined by the lending institution. Usually, the loan period is four weeks (or 30 days). The patron is responsible for returning the borrowed item(s) by the due date to the Kinlaw Library Desk.  If the item(s) can be renewed, make a request to the Interlibrary Loan office at least one week prior to the due date. Patrons will be charged for all items not returned along with any associated lost book fees or late fees.

Institutions that loan materials, including Asbury University, reserve the right to recall items at any time.

Are there items I cannot borrow?
Items that are not available include:

  • Entire volumes or issues of periodicals (only specific articles may be requested)
  • Reference books
  • Text Books
  • Rare materials, including manuscripts
  • Items published over 75 years ago
  • Items less than 6 months old
  • Requests which may violate copyright limitations

Can I get dissertations?
Often, dissertations are only available at the issuing institution, and not all libraries will loan them. There is no certainty that a request for a dissertation can be filled or that you will receive it in a timely manner. The Interlibrary Loan office will fill as many requests as possible.

What about copyright?
The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for a purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If an individual uses a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in it’s judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
