Finding Articles in Periodicals: Where

Articles are sometimes hard to find. Use this Guide to show you the right way to search.

Where to search first?

We have several types of databases and indexes from which to choose.  But which one will work best for you?   See this helpful short video to help you make your choice.  Even though this is from another school, the principle is the same.

Where are our periodical indexes?

Print indexes

Our older print indexes are behind the current periodical shelves - just before the microfilm cabinets.   We keep them because many electronic databases DO NOT cover historical materials.   In other words, many will not search for articles that were published prior to 1984 or so.   We have kept any print index that is historical.  In addition, we do not have some periodical databases that cover certain subject areas.  We have kept any print index which covers topics which we deem important but does not have an equivilent electronic version.

Electronic indexes - AKA Periodical Databases

This is the place you want to go for the most up to date information and to see the full text of articles.  Our electronic index list is located on the main Library web page under the words Find Articles.  You can also find a complete listing here.

Where are the articles?

LOCATING OUR PRINTED PERIODICALS - ON THE SHELVES - paper copies

Periodicals are located on the main floor of the library where they are shelved alphabetically by title.  They may be in the form of paper copies or on microfilm.  No periodicals may be taken from the library.  Photocopies may be made of articles in paper format.  Microfilm reels may be read on machines located in the copier room near the Circulation Desk.  These machines can also print copies of the articles.  If you are unfamiliar with the operation of the machines, don't hesitate to ask members of the library staff for assistance.

CURRENT PERIODICALS: Periodicals are shelved by periodical title in the Periodicals area on the main level in Kinlaw Library. This room is immediately to the left  as you enter the Library.

BACK Issues of PERIODICALS are shelved by periodical title in the same area on the main level - directly behind the current issues.  Our older issues might be in the Microfilm cabinets or bound and on the shelves.

Ask for assistance, if you need it, in finding our physical copies of periodical titles.
